Blue Lotus ~ The Flower of Intuition & Enlightenment

Blue Lotus Flower

I use Blue Lotus in my practice quite a bit and also include it in some of my products. The intoxicating aroma of blue lotus makes for a gorgeous perfume, and is an excellent addition to products meant to connect you with Source energy, elevate your intuition, and awaken your Third Eye and Crown Chakras.

Blue Lotus Nymphaea Caerulea or “Egyptian Lotus” is actually a water lily that has gained a lot of traction in recent years. It is an aquatic plant that the ancient Egyptians used often as a symbol of immortality, life, connection to the afterlife, and to communicate with the divine. You can see the blue lotus all over inscriptions throughout history. This flower has entheogens which are mild mind-altering substances that can alter perception, cognition, and behavior. Blue Lotus is used by religious and spiritual groups across the world to connect with Source, Divine, and/or the gods.

Evidence has been found of Blue Lotus being used in various cultures including Mayan, Syrian, Thai, and Egypt. Along with its mild hallucinogenic effects, blue lotus is known for its medicinal qualities including aphrodesia, treatment of depression and anxiety, pain management, insomnia, and treatment of stomach upset. In addition, blue lotus contains two alkaloids called apomorphine and nuciferine. Apomorphine is a non-selective dopamine agonist that can instill a happy and euphoric feeling and is used in treatment of Parkinson’s disease and is also an excellent treatment for erectile dysfunction. Nuciferine is a compound that acts as an antipsychotic, inducing feelings of calmness.

The Egyptian Book of the Dead is the primary source of study for the blue lotus from ancient Egypt as they believed that magic, religion, and medicine were all intertwined with each other. Other sources include the Ebers papyrus from 1500 BC which included over 800 medicinal treatments, some of which included the blue lotus.

While Blue Lotus hasn’t been officially approved for human consumption by the FDA in the United States, it is not a controlled substance and is legally allowed to be sold, cultivated, and purchased EXCEPT in the state of Louisiana where it remains illegal due to it’s psychoactive nature.

Consumption of blue lotus includes sipping in teas and smoking. Typically, sipping will induce a sense of calm and serenity that promotes a lovely meditative state while smoking will bring the mild hallucinogenic effects to some individuals.
